8 Similes You Must Know for Your IELTS Exam

Introduction

When you give a simile in an IELTS speaking task, it can be used for many different purposes. It could be to explain what you mean or it could just be there because it makes the sentence sound better. The purpose of this article is to help you learn how to use similes in your speaking tasks and give you some examples of when they're most appropriate.

Simile Definition

A simile is a figure of speech that uses the word "like" or "as" to describe two things. It's a comparison between two things without using "like" or "as." Similes are used for effect, to make something more interesting or exciting.

Similes can be used in many different ways:

  • They can help you remember what an adjective means (e.g., It was as big as an elephant).
  • They can add color and detail to your writing (e.g., The room was filled with an overwhelming stench of rotting fish).

Similes in IELTS Speaking & Writing

Similes are a great way to add color and humor to your speech. Similes can also be used to show the speaker's attitude towards something or explain something in more detail. These similes are helpful while you  preparing for IELTS Speaking

Here are some examples:

  • "I feel like a duck out of water." This simile means that you don't feel comfortable in a situation because it is different from what you're used to. In this case, the person who says this feels like they aren't able to swim like other ducks do--they don't fit in with their surroundings very well!
  • "He was as cool as ice cream on hot summer day." This simile shows how calm and relaxed someone is; they aren't bothered by anything going on around them!
